Can your computer type in the traditional Chinese instead of simplified? Not that I don't understand, I still prefere the beauty of the our Chinese Characters. Sorry to be so picky.
Lolita, My computer has been set up to enter simplified Chinese using Pin Yin method. If I want to transfer the words into traditional, I have to type in a Word doc, highlight the text, then transfer it into traditional, then copy and paste on to the blog comment. It causes a lot of trouble. I agree with you that traditional Chinese charaters carry lots of beauty of art. Lih-Jane 3/7/07
I use Microsoft offiice proofing tool 2003. It has been set up for Pin Yin input and enter simplifed Chinese. Of course, I can ask our IT staff to change it into Zhu-Yin input, but then I have to figure out the keyboard setting for Zhu-Yin. Too much works. Lih-Jane
Many thanks for the tale about our music teacher. He really has a soft spot in my heart. He is the only music teacher that did not scare me. I miss him tremendusly.
Also thanks for mentioning my story poem. I want to post it here but I don't know how. Usually with other blogs, I can post writings, but not this one, I need instructions.
Also, the Chinese poem that I wrote about him was published in a poetry magazine. I can post it here too.
I am glad we are writing more memories of our teachers. We shall write more memories of our classmates who are watching us from the heaven. They have been part of our lives. I often think of them.
By the way, Pepita Pan(Pan, Shi-shin) has our music teacher's contact information in California. She was the one who kept me updated about him. Our teacher does not socialize too much due to poor health. He is focusing his energy on composing. That was the situation in the summer of 2005. I hope his health has improved since then.

Rita, yes, so many wonderful memories in his class. I remember once Tsai, Ma-ling asked him to play the famous song, How Can I not Miss you. He flushed when he heard the words.
I guess it must be Ana who started singing Love story main theme. She used to sing many beautiful songs in English on the way to bus stop, such as, The first time, ever I saw your face. Ah, that is the song from Love Story, am I right?
Ana was one of the most romantic one among our classmates. I hope you and George keep singing to each other.....

Do you use microsoft? If so, you can set up to use Pin Yin method, and the traditional from Taiwan. That's the way I type it.
A friend who is savy in computer set it up for me. If not, it's all right.

你真的在電視上看到蕭老師嗎?那表示他身體較好了,真替他高興.因老師的音樂在戒嚴時代被民進黨用過,所以曾列入黑名單.另外他赴美的故事就是阿杜所說過的,不知你們聽過沒?我曾在高雄文化中心聽過老師的音樂會,全部是他的曲子,我聽到眼淚流下來了,心想我們老師真棒,做出這麼好的曲子,但那次他不能來台,因他心臟病,只有影帶放給來賓看.有一次我和家人在愛河散步,遠遠看那不是蕭老師嗎?馬上走近去打招呼,老師雖然不認識我,但我跟他說我是文藻的學生,我聽過他的音樂會,他能够來台表示他身體好很多,希望他能繼續作曲,他說他是來領政府給他的一個獎,因他還在作愛河交響曲,所以他到愛河來看看,當時他身體還蠻虛的,真高興他身體好了.

A Romantic Musical Poet --蕭泰然
--to my teacher with love
A young handsome musician
Made an incredible promise
To a class of sixty girls one day:
“I will play the wedding march for you.
Just call me. I will be there in no time.”
This romantic promised his 17-years-old students,
Who constantly dreamt of prince charming,
Whose fantasies were flying as high as the clouds.
The promise played in their minds for many years,
While waiting for princes to appear on white horses.
By the time those girls were getting married,
The romantic musician was in America,
Struggling painfully for his own survival.
An unexpected blow in his life
Forced him to leave his family, his hometown and his island.
As a gift shop owner in Atlanta, Georgia,
In his leisure time, he played piano to amuse himself.
One afternoon, three American women passed by,
“Young man, what are you doing here?”
Those words struck the musician like a thunderbolt.
He suddenly woke up, and took a look at himself.
He remembered his dream of becoming a composer.
“Oh, my God, what am I doing here?”
He packed up and went to live in the Golden State, California.
He began a new life as a piano teacher, and started to compose again.
He had a motherland that he could not return to,
But the folksongs of that land were rooted deeply in his soul.
The landscape and the people of that island were vivid in his mind.
Thousands miles away from his hometown,
Thousands days away from his family,
Out of nostalgia, homesickness, and illness,
He poured these emotions and sorrows into his music.
His drive to compose lead him to further studies.
He composed many concertos, based on the folksongs of his island.
The performers and the audiences wept over the beauty of the melodies.
Twenty years after he left the island,
His works were performed at the National Concert Hall.
The audiences were moved to tears when they heard the music.
The Jade Mountain’s Hymn…; Ah, Formosa…; Song of the Lily…
The island held a “Tyzen Hsiao Music Festival.”
He is frequently invited back to his homeland, and
Commissioned to compose more songs.
He embraces his hometown and his hometown embraces him.
He is called the Rachmaninoff of the Island, the romantic musical poet.
He never played the wedding march at any of the 60 weddings.
Those brides didn't mind at all.
They are grateful to have him as a music teacher.
Who played Chopin, Mozart,Schubert, and Schumann for them.
They were thankful to have a great musician,
Who shared his romantic love of music.
They are cheerful to see the teacher,
Who had suffered from life’s slings and arrows,
But, decided to fight against fate.
They are proud of him, the island foremost contemporary composer,
Stands up strongly to dignify himself, his country and his Lord.
For those girls, who soon will turn fifty,
The concertos are more long-lasting than a wedding march.
For them, having him as a music teacher, and role model
Is a lifetime blessing and a lifetime march.

再謝謝Lolita讓我重溫你的詩.還記得文藻時,正流行愛的故事,我們要求老師彈它的主題曲,不知你們記得否?上音樂欣賞課老師放音樂讓我們欣賞,突然一個高音讓一位同學嚇一跳,老師開心的笑了,不知那位同學還記不記得?(在美國的一位同學),還有聽一首交響曲,都是同一段音樂,重覆整個樂章,(對不起,我忘了它的名字,那位記得,)老師說聽第一段覺得還不錯,第二段還可以,第三段開始覺得不耐煩了,第四段想要去砸音響,第五段又開始覺得不錯了,現在音樂還在我的腦海裏.我們真的有一位好老師.
